From 2006, this is The Story of Heavy Metal according to VH1, with all of the annoying repetitions and commercials taken out. No mention is made of Deep Purple, but there's lots of attention on L.A. hair metal, the hair farmers who sported it, and the new MTV that further commercialized it. However, all in all, it's pretty enjoyable from MTV's stepchild music video outlet, VH1.

What was there before heavy metal? British proto-heavy metal
